Introduction
Colombia is nicknamed the "gateway to South America" because it sits in the northwestern part of the continent where South America connects with Central and North America. It is the fifth largest country in Latin America and home to the world's second largest population of Spanish-speaking people.
ā
āColombia is a land of extremes. Through its center run the towering, snow-covered volcanoes and mountains of the Andes. Tropical beaches line the north and west. And there are deserts in the north and vast grasslands, called Los Llanos, in the east.

Two weeks in Colombia should provide you with a good feel for the country and give you enough time to see some of the major sights and cities. Keep in mind that road conditions can be unpredictable, so it's best to fly between the far-flung destinations.
Itinerary At A Glance
When we spent fifteen months travelling through Latin America several years ago, Colombia was the country that āgot awayā from us. Although we missed it that time around, it always remained in the back of our heads as a destination to which we hoped to explore. Not only had we heard so much from other travellers about how Colombia was one of their favorite countries, but we wanted to experience for ourselves a place where peace and stability have returned.
ā
Although we researched Colombia as a destination before our trip, we were still surprised not only by the diversity, but also the sheer size of the country ā imagine the United Kingdom, Germany, and France combined. The Andean mountain range splits into three branches in Colombia, and youāll find the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the northeast, Caribbean Sea in the north, Pacific Ocean in the west, and Amazon in the southeast. Across these regions youāll find not only shifts in landscapes, but also in culture, people, and cuisine. In other words, Colombia offers travellers plenty of options.
